Approved Training Courses in Gym Equipment Repairs, Servicing and Maintenance

Learn how to do your own gym equipment maintenance with training courses designed for beginners and professionals

“YOUR BRILLIANT INSTRUCTIONS HELPED ME SO MUCH! THANK. YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!” DK, August 2024

Jon’s gym maintenance training courses cover all aspects from the essentials of how to maintain a variety of gym equipment for beginners, through to complex diagnosis and fault finding for professionals.  Courses can be individually tailored to suit specific requirements. The courses are lead by Jon, using equipment at your own premises, and may be completed remotely online, if in-person attendance is not feasible.

Courses are run on-demand at mutually agreed times and dates, and can be delivered over consecutive days or spread over a number of weeks according to your own learning preferences. The entire course takes 5 days (30 hours) to complete unless you have prior, relevant experience, in which case the time may be less.

Having your own staff trained in gym maintenance provides you with a number of competitive advantages which can help differentiate your gym:-

  • More equipment availability and happier customers
  • No downtime waiting for a service technician to visit
  • Doing your own regular maintenance (a little and often) helps avoid problems
  • Better utilisation of your staff when the gym is quiet
  • Avoid expensive callouts and labour charges from 3rd party service technicians
  • Source replacement parts yourself and avoid mark-up charges
  • Better understanding of your own equipment allows better planning for gym upgrades

All courses are endorsed by The Gym Safety Council and accredited by J.C. Isaacs, Chartered Engineer, BEng (Hons), MIET who is a registered member of the UK Engineering Council and an internationally recognised, independent, technical expert on the repair and maintenance of gym equipment. Jon has over 40 years relevant experience as an Engineer, designing and building machines, with many years spent working hands-on, and has himself been periodically trained by many of the world leading equipment manufacturers.  As a result, the course content offered here is built on real life, practical experience and insider knowledge from the manufacturers themselves, to provide you with a unique and valuable training experience that will allow you to become a fully qualified gym technician!

The Courses:

Level 1 Gym Maintenance for Beginners

Most equipment failures can be attributed to inadequate or incorrect maintenance and the Level 1 course gives you everything you need to know about correctly setting up and looking after your equipment in order to prevent problems occurring in the first place.  The course includes essential safety, how to choose and use hand tools, how to perform inspections, how to make adjustments to keep equipment running smoothly such as adjusting and lubricating treadmill running belts, re-tensioning drive belts, fitting and adjusting gym cables, and daily cleaning routines to help you maximise equipment life and ensure that it is always safe to use. The course is suitable for commercial, private and residential gym operators/owners and is the place to start if you have little or no previous experience of maintaining gym equipment. An optional assessment of competency is included.

This is a 6 hour course (1 day) and there are no prerequisites or prior experience needed.

Level 2 Practical Gym Repairs and Servicing   **RECOMMENDED**

This is the most popular course and suitable for gym owner/operators who want to have their own in-house maintenance capability. The course is suitable for people who already have a basic understanding of fitness equipment maintenance but want to learn more about how the equipment works and how to complete routine maintenance, basic diagnosis and general repairs. The course includes how to safely strip down equipment, identify main components and their function, how to change parts such as motors, running belts, running decks, drive belt and how to make replacement gym cables and perform basic re-upholstery of cushions. It covers all of the most popular cardio and strength equipment and includes how to complete an annual safety inspection and how to perform PAT testing specifically for gym equipment so that it can be safely and confidently put back into service. An optional assessment of competency is included.

This is a 12 hour course (2 days) and delegates should ideally have completed Level 1 (above) or have some prior experience of basic gym equipment inspection or maintenance as a prerequisite.

Level 3 Professional Gym Technician

This course is aimed at for staff who are already working at Level 2 and wish to advance their skills to be able to conduct more complex fault diagnosis and repairs so as to be able to safely handle the majority of gym maintenance and repairs. This includes understanding how machine systems work, understanding design principles, testing and measuring techniques including fault finding of motors, circuit boards, drive systems, batteries and generators. Advanced servicing techniques are covered so that delegates are able to predict failures and complete preventative maintenance. Equipment safety is covered including UKCA (CE marking), equipment safety laws and guidelines, PAT testing of class 1 and class 2 gym equipment, risk assessments and method statements, equipment classification and duty cycle.  The course includes a wide range of real-life fault finding techniques and repairs so as to prepare the delegate for immediate deployment upon completion. An optional assessment of competency is included. https://www.traditionrolex.com/46
