Engineering for Safety and Wellbeing

Community Interest Company number 16864360

Promoting wellbeing and safety through engineering,

regardless of background, income or ability

Engineering for Safety and Wellbeing is a not-for-profit organisation registered in England and Wales.

Vision

We see a world where practical engineering knowhow empowers people – building lasting self-confidence, promoting wellbeing, and protection from harm, regardless of background, income, or ability.

Mission

To equip underrepresented and disadvantaged individuals and groups with the technical skills and self-confidence to avoid injury, improve health, and unlock opportunities in education and employment. Through inclusive design, hands-on learning, and accessible tools, we aim to make engineering a force for resilience, dignity, and opportunity.

Targeted Activity:

 Thrive Works

Empowering people through engineering outreach activities in welcoming, community venues — places where people feel warmth, connection and belonging.

Building Communities by bringing together residents, employers, educators and professional bodies to provide well organised, innovative, practical events providing the necessary expertise and resources for engagement through initiatives including Fixology, TinkerTech, Craft and Construct, Design to Make, and Movement and Machines.

Showcasing grassroots talent beyond traditional engineering paradigms, where engineering intersects and impacts wider society (eg. arts, dance, craft, fashion, music, cinematography, and artificial intelligence).

Create Digital Portfolios, Networks and Structured Pathways into further technical learning and careers in engineering.

Gym Safety Council (GSC)

Providing gym equipment maintenance training & certification programs aimed at non-engineers, defining safety standards, providing ongoing support, & engaging in community initiatives centred in local gyms and fitness spaces to promote wider social responsibility and opportunity.

Safety: Ensuring all gym technicians are adequately trained and kept up-to-date at an industry wide standard of competency

Recognition: Establishing nationally recognised pathways to technical education and employment within the fitness industry

Participation: Empowering local gyms and studios to become hubs for technical skills training, workshops and related community events

Create Safer Gyms: Protecting gym users from subpar services by promoting awareness of best practise and enabling in-house capability

 Stride Assist

Supporting innovation in the field of inclusive equipment design that promotes independence and wellbeing for everyone. An example of current activity is the design and build of an innovative, low cost, walking machine, that exactly mirrors the natural walking gait for people living with physical or mental impairments, such as acquired brain injuries, strokes & dementia. In these projects, we support successful development by:

Actively listening and understanding the exact requirements defined by the innovator and translating non-technical language into clear engineering briefs

Creating digital and physical prototypes enabling wider discussion, evaluation and development

Collaborating with stakeholders on broader technical matters such as design for manufacturing, operation, materials, cost, safety and compliance

Connecting with investors and manufacturers to enable a structured progression through the TRL framework from idea to qualified solution
